PUNGRA

Dance-Fitness to Punjabi Music

Go deeper: what makes up a dance-fitness class to Punjabi music (a.k.a. bhangra), what bhangra is, how to say it, and how to listen to the music. About 90 minutes.

You do not need to attend a class, and there is no routine to learn. We recommend starting with Introduction to Dance-Fitness. If you are an instructor who wants to teach this music, carry on to Certify with Pungra.

  1. Module 1: Anatomy of a Pungra class

7 minutes. A Pungra class is exercise to Punjabi music: warm up, conditioning, plyometrics and a cool-down, taught on the fly with options for every level.
  2. Module 2: What is bhangra?

8 minutes. Bhangra is better understood as something people do than as a thing: a Punjabi celebration with roots in the harvest, part of a family of Punjabi dances.
  3. Module 3: How to say it

5 minutes. Say bhangra closer to “pun-gra” than “bang-rah”, and say Punjab, not “north India”. A small effort shows respect.
  4. Module 4: How to listen to the music

8 minutes. Learn to hear the dhol under the voices, and to tell Punjabi music from Bollywood film music.
  5. Module 5: Two kinds of energy

4 minutes. Shakti and Shiva describe two energies. Knowing which one you are choosing helps you choose well when the goal is fitness and community.
  6. Module 6: Appreciation, instead of appropriation

8 minutes. The same standard applies to everyone: understanding, credit and respect. Ask questions, offer the correct version kindly, and say thank you when you are corrected.
  7. Module 7: The Pungra story and joining in

20 minutes. Pungra grew from one question: what would make someone keep exercising for life? You can support it whether or not you ever attend a class.
  8. Assessment

10 questions, about 6 minutes. Check what you have learned and get feedback on every answer.
