What is dance-fitness?
Dance is one word with many goals. A wedding dance, a stage show and a workout may all use the same moves, yet they are three different things. Dance-fitness is the one built for you: your health, your energy and your enjoyment, with nobody watching.
Why so many people are confused
The idea of dancing has been colonised by performing arts. Most people grew up seeing dance in movies, on stage and on social media. It has not always been that way, and it does not have to stay that way.
Four types of dancing
Two questions place any dancing on a simple map: who is it for (an audience, or yourself), and how much skill does it need?
- Partying: for an audience, low skill.
- Spiritual: for yourself, low skill.
- Performing: for an audience, high skill.
- Exercising: for yourself, high skill. This is Pungra’s focus.
Same word, four different goals
- Spiritual: dancing meditatively. Meaning matters more than fitness. Question to ask: do I zone into a different frequency?
- Partying: dancing for fun, at weddings, parties and nights out. The service provider is the DJ. Question: am I having fun?
- Performing: dancing for an audience, on stages, in teams and on social media. The service provider is the choreographer. Question: does it entertain?
- Exercising: dancing for your health. The service provider is the fitness instructor. Question: am I getting fitter?
Be discerning about which claims are being made and what you are choosing.
Exercise, not performance
Pungra is a brand that focuses on exercise and fitness to Punjabi music, not performing arts. Many others make similar claims about “bhangra fitness” or “bhangra aerobics” but are really focused on performing. Their goals, customers and industries are different, and the next modules show you how to tell them apart.
