Why a class and community keep you going

Key idea: Habits spread through people we know. Being expected and welcomed is what keeps most people coming back.

Habits spread through people we know

In Connected, Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler used the Framingham Heart Study of about 15,000 people. A person was 57% more likely to become obese if a friend did, 20% if a friend of a friend did, and 10% three steps away. Some critics say people simply befriend others like themselves, so treat the numbers as a pointer, not proof. The point: the people around you shape what you keep doing, which is why community matters.

Finding your people

Radha Agrawal’s Belong (she founded Daybreaker, an early-morning dance movement) says hundreds of online friends does not mean having anyone to confide in. Know your energy, values and interests, find a few close people, then find groups that match what you want.

Why community helps you continue

  • Expected: someone is looking forward to seeing you.
  • Welcomed: walking in feels easy, so coming back does too.
  • Together: the group carries you on days when motivation dips.
Do this now: invite one person to your next class, or ask a friend to be your exercise partner.
